Large business have been taking advantage of the efficiency, professional image, and cost savings since the first introduction of franking machines, or as they are otherwise called postage meters way back in 1922.

For myself I remember the excitement and fun (NOT!) to be had from queuing with the old type franking machine at my local post office. When I did it they were very heavy, and for a young chap incredibly un-cool!

Like everything else the good old franking machine has undergone somewhat of a makeover, and now looks every inch the high tech robust piece of modern office equipment. I would almost go so far as to say that I wouldn’t be embarrassed to be seen in public with one.

Though the days of having to queue down at the post office to refresh your franking machines credit, are also long gone, as the credit can now be topped up electronically.

But how much money does a franking machine save my business over stamps?

Based on a typical small company mix of mail, mostly letters with the odd parcel thrown in about 15-18%!

And when you consider you’ll also gain time saving from not having to send someone out to buy stamps and apply them, and some nice marketing benefits (your franked mail can include your lovely colour company logo), the humble franking machine looks very attractive indeed.

If you want to break your savings down in more detail, the way this works is that the post office discount franked mail, because it’s easier for them to handle.

These saving get passed on to you… very nice too.

  • Save at least 3p on every 1st Class Letter you send
  • Save at least 5p on every 2nd Class Letter you send
  • Save at least 11p on every 1st class large letter
  • Save up to 89p on every 2kg Parcel you send

So you could make a very easy 15% saving on current postal costs, a lot more if you send more parcels and large letters.

Most basic franking machines are now supplied with a postage scale, so you can weigh your post rather than risk the recipient picking up the excess charge if you inadvertently under estimate the correct postal charge (very easily done as postal charges are always changing).
